There’s an awareness day for almost everything and August 23 is Find Your Inner Nerd Day, something lovers of tech might well appreciate. But don’t we all discover that we are tech lovers when we go on holiday? Europesure Travel Insurance is certain that many of us simply cannot travel without our gadgets.
This could be a camera to capture those unforgettable views, a fitness tracker for recording those beach runs, a tablet that keeps the kids entertained, or earphones that play music by the pool. You might be reading a book via your gadget, or catching up with work on a laptop. Tech is everywhere, when we go on holiday.
The sum total of the value of your gadgets will probably amount to a pretty costly sum, so it is vital you make sure they are covered before you take your trip. If you purchase a typical travel insurance policy, you will find some cover under your baggage and personal effects cover, but pay attention to the single item limit. It may well be nowhere near enough to protect your gadget.
If you did manage to claim on your standard travel insurance policy, there would be the policy excess to pay first, so what is left may fall far short of the actual value of the gadget.
What about home insurance?
A UK home insurance policy won’t necessarily cover your gadgets once they are taken out of the home. You would need to have an all-risks extension to your home contents insurance to even stand a chance of claiming on your policy.
If you live in an EU or EEA country, you may not have such home insurance protection options available to you. It is not usual for a French home insurance policy to offer all-risks cover in this way, for example. If you intend travelling with all your electronic and computer equipment alongside you, you probably need to take out separate gadget insurance.
What’s covered by gadget insurance?
Gadget insurance will vary from insurer to insurer, but at Europesure Travel Insurance, the gadget extension covers accidental and malicious damage to your devices. Cosmetic damage, such as the dents and scratches, which could well occur when travelling, are also covered.
The policy extension also provides protection against theft or loss of gadgets, liquid damage and the financial loss that could accompany unauthorised calls, texts, and data usage.
What do I need to check?
Should you need to make a claim, you will need to be able to prove that the gadget was working prior to the incident for which you are claiming and have proof as to its purchase date and cost. Any item must be valued under the item limit stated on the gadget extension policy.
You should also be careful how you take care of them. Leaving your gadgets unattended or in full view within a hire car, could invalidate your cover.
Any replacement will be like-for-like – to the same value as the item on which the loss occurred.
It’s not a standalone cover.
Europesure’s gadget cover is an extension to the all-important travel insurance policy that you really should have in place every time you travel overseas, whether you live in the UK, EU, EEA, Gibraltar or Monaco.
Adding this cover on to our comprehensive single trip or annual multi-trip travel insurance policy will give you extra peace of mind. That will allow you to exact every ounce of enjoyment out of your gadgets, whether that is for capturing a group selfie, finishing that gripping novel, or listening to your favourite band’s latest release, whilst sunning yourself by the pool.
